Lakeway PTO News - October 29, 2004

Saturday is the BIG Fall Carnival--rain or shine! We will see you there from 2 – 5pm. Please help make this the most successful carnival ever! Information about the carnival is available at www.lakewaypto.org/carnival2004/home.htm, including a map showing the booth assignments (for booth coordinators), a map of the carnival’s events, and a list of families and local businesses that have generously sponsored this event. We’ll have many new activities this year and baked goods, Mr. Gatti’s pizza, Buster’s BBQ, drinks, and lots of other concessions, so bring your appetite and have a great time! Check the PTO Web site (www.lakewaypto.org) for any changes due to inclement weather.

If you park at Emmaus Church when attending the Carnival, PLEASE use the lower parking lot only. The Church has a wedding scheduled for Saturday afternoon and has asked Carnival patrons not to park in the upper lot. Thank you for your cooperation.

Happy Halloween! Friday night the Lakeway Village Square will be having its annual trick-or-treat from 4-6pm. All the stores will open their doors for the kids to trick-or-treat, and this year Jim McDermott (children’s musician) will be performing for part of the time. The fire trucks and police cars will be there as usual as well. It is always fun and it is free.

The Lakeway Elementary School Yearbook Committee needs your talent to ensure that that this year’s yearbook is truly special! If you take pictures at the Fall Carnival this weekend or at any other school events, please share your pictures by placing prints in the box in the office or by e-mailing digital pictures to our yearbook sponsor, Janet Byler, at bylerj@laketravis.txed.net. More information about what kinds of pictures are needed and the minimum requirements for digital pictures are posted at www.lakewaypto.org/yearbook.htm.

Reminder for parents of children in grades K-2: Please help support the Bake Sale at the Fall Carnival by dropping off donations of cookies or brownies today in the PTO workroom. Please package cookies or brownies individually in bundles of three. Thank you to all of the families who have already donated drinks.

If you have not already done so, please record your volunteer hours for October. You can use the volunteer books in the office or the Web site (www.lakewaypto.org/log.htm) to log your hours, but you only need to log them once. If you have been working on anything related to the carnival, please count these hours too!

Flu Vaccine Clinic Rescheduled! FluMist is being administered at LWE Friday, November 19 from 9 - 10am. Please sign up at the front desk so we can make sure enough vaccine is available. If you sign up please make sure you come; it is important that we do not waste any vaccine that is left over. FluMist offered at LWE is ONLY for healthy children and healthy adults from age 9 to 49. The cost of FluMist is $30.00, cash or check payable to Dan Thompson, M.D. Insurance and/or tax receipts will be available. When you sign up please make sure you read the Vaccine Information Statement from the CDC about FluMist, as well as the Consent Form for participants. These forms are available at the front desk and on the PTO Web site (www.lakewaypto.org). If you answer “no” to any of the questions on the Consent Form you may not be able to receive the vaccine. Some people may be concerned that it is a "live" virus, however, there were few side effects reported by people who received it last year. (Remember, the MMR vaccine and chickenpox vaccine are composed of live, weakened viruses.) Healthy children ages 5 - 8 may receive FluMist from their family physician.

The School Store needs a few volunteers to help students from the LWE Student Council run things during lunch on Wednesdays from 11am – 1pm. If you can help, please contact Becky Carfer at bcarfer@austin.rr.com.

You can pick up your Sally Foster orders on Thursday, November 4--look for more details about picking up orders in next week’s Tuesday folder. If you have any problems with your order, please contact Betsy Golson by November 10 at the latest at 608-6949.

School spirit t-shirts will be delivered in mid-November. Look for a few volunteers wearing samples of the shirts at the Fall Carnival. There’s still time to order a t-shirt…just pick up an order form at the Fall Carnival or download it at www.lakewaypto.org. If you ordered a t-shirt at the beginning of the school year, your shirt(s) will be sent home with your child soon.

Attention online shoppers! If you shop online, you could be earning money for Lakeway Elementary, at no additional cost to you! All you have to do is go to www.schoolpop.com and enter the school ID #0110928. Then you can access the store you want directly from the Schoolpop Web site and start shopping. Lakeway Elementary gets a percentage of what you buy, sometimes as high as 25 percent! Here are just a few of the stores: Old Navy, Target, West Marine, Tiger Direct, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Nordstrom, Newport News, Netflix, Overstock.com, Patagonia, Travelocity, Timberland, The Container Store, The Golf Warehouse, Talbots, Spiegel, Sears, Soccer.com, REI, Radio Shack, QVC, Overtons, Liz Claiborne, Lillian Vernon, Land's End, LL Bean, Kohls, Kenneth Cole, JJill, JCPenney, Harry and David, Holiday Inn, Hallmark Flowers, The Gap, Footlocker, FTD, Expedia, Disneystore, Best Buy, Bass Pro Shop, Barnes & Noble, and Ann Taylor. (For a complete list, go to http://www.schoolpop.com/cgi/allmerch.cgi?start=all.) Please take a moment to register for our school and start earning. Our last statement showed only six people using Schoolpop, but they earned $135.05 for the school. Thanks for supporting Lakeway Elementary.

The nurse’s office is in need of used elastic-waist pants: sweat pants, wind pants, jeans, leggings, or any kind of pants are great as long as they have an elastic waist. We use them for students who need to change clothes during the school day. All sizes for both boys and girls are needed. Please drop them off at the nurse’s office at your convenience. Thank you!

If you requested a personalized “volunteer” badge, thank you for your patience. The person who makes the badges is still having computer and printer problems that have prevented her from getting the new badges finished.

The Fall 4th and 5th grade music students will be performing a musical called ROCK! on Thursday, November 18 at 7pm in the Lakeway Elementary cafeteria. It covers the history of rock and roll. There will be speaking parts, singing, and groovin' to the beat. A trunk sale will also be held on the 18th in the Lakeway Elementary gym. Funds from the sale of booth space will be used to help the Music department purchase two sections of flipFORM risers. These risers can be flipped to make risers as well as a flat platform for small groups. The Music department’s goal is to raise $1,192 ($540 for each section and $112 shipping cost). Long live Rock and Roll!

LWE Trunk Show—Reserve a booth now or just plan to attend! LWE will be hosting a Trunk Show on November 18 from 4-8pm. If you are interested in reserving a booth, please contact Susan Thompson (lakeway5@austin.rr.com) or go to www.lakewaypto.org for a vendor registration form. Booths are $35.
