Lakeway PTO News - February 11, 2005

Be sure to mark your calendar for this year’s Talent Show. We have 200 rising stars participating this year! Performance times are Friday, February 18, at 7pm for fourth and fifth graders, and Saturday, February 19 at 6pm (times are approximate: kindergarten and first graders: 6-7pm; second graders: 7-8pm; and third graders: 8-9pm). The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for students, and free for preschoolers, with a bake sale in the cafeteria. Be sure to order your copy of the Talent Show on DVD for only $9. Thank you to everyone at Hill Country Pediatric Dentistry, our Talent Show sponsor, for their generous support.

We are looking for volunteers to help with concessions during the Talent Show next Friday and Saturday night. The shifts will be from approximately 6:30-7:00pm and 7:45-8:00pm on Friday, February 18 and from approximately 5:30-6:00pm, 6:45-7:00pm, and 7:45-8:00pm on Saturday, February 19. All times are approximate due to the performance breaks between grades. We will sell baked goods, drinks, and popcorn and need four to five volunteers for each shift. If you can help, please send a note to volunteer@lakewaypto.org.

Please note that the Lakeway Police Department is ticketing and towing illegally parked cars at the school. If you park in a fire lane, Lakeway PD will issue you a ticket or possibly tow your car. We understand that parking at school is limited, especially when there are holiday events, but plenty of parking is available across the street at Emmaus Church. If you get a ticket or get towed, please do not blame the school--parking in a fire lane is a ticketable offense of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code. Fire lanes at school are clearly marked with a red stripe. Thank you for watching for fire lanes before parking your car.

Nominate your favorite teacher for a Silver Apple Award! KEYE, Austin’s CBS television station, recognizes a very special teacher with a “Silver Apple Award” on KEYE’s Friday-evening and Sunday-morning newscasts during the school year. Students and their parents are encouraged to nominate their favorite teacher. Winners are featured in a special interview segment during KEYE News and are presented with an engraved award. Nominees must be full-time, certified classroom teachers in grades preschool through twelve. For complete rules, a nomination form, and a list of past winners, go to http://keyetv.com/silverapple/.

This will be the last year that LWE is able to use LTE's sound system. We were fortunate to have this system "on loan" for the past two years and used it for the Talent Show and other school events. Next year, we will need to use our old sound system, which we have outgrown. We are looking for help from a parent or volunteer to suggest what kind of system we need to install in our gym and how to install soundproofing to make future Talent Shows and school plays more enjoyable for the audience. The suggestions made from our "sound engineering committee" will be presented to the PTO for purchase so there is no cost to the volunteer. We just need someone who is knowledgeable in this area to evaluate the school’s needs and recommend how to proceed. If you can help, please contact Julie Wilson at wilsonj@laketravis.txed.net.

We are looking for someone to coordinate the garage sale this spring. If you can help or would like more information, please send a note to volunteer@lakewaypto.org.
