Lakeway PTO News - September 2, 2005
The first PTO meeting is Wednesday, September 7, at 9am in the volunteer workroom. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend all PTO meetings.
If you have not already done so, please record your volunteer hours for August. You can use the volunteer books in the office or the Web site (www.lakewaypto.org/log.htm) to log your hours, but you only need to log them once. Lakeway Elementary has been blessed with wonderful volunteers who contribute many hours of service to the school in many different ways. Last year, our volunteers logged over 14,000 hours at the school. That’s 10 full-time positions worth over $230,000! However, many of you are not logging your hours on the Web site or in the books in the office. There are two good reasons to make sure that every hour you work for the school is logged:
1. Volunteers with 100 hours of service in the district in an academic year become members of the LTISD “Best Club.” Club members receive a 10% discount off all LTISD community education programs, including after-school classes and summer camps. In addition, Best Club members receive free admission to LTISD events such as football games and theatrical performances. As soon as you reach 100 hours, you’ll receive a letter of thanks from the district and a card that entitles you to these benefits.
2. When the district applies for grants from different sources, the grant applications almost always request the total number of volunteer hours provided within the district. Volunteer hours do make a difference in these applications, so it’s important to make sure that our volunteer hour totals are accurate.
What counts as a volunteer hour? ANYTHING that you do for the school. There are so many busy volunteers with completely blank volunteer sheets in the books…please take a few minutes to log your hours.
It’s not too late to early vote in the September 10 LTISD school bond election. You can vote at Lakeway Elementary today or on September 6 from 7:30am to 4:30pm, or on Saturday, September 10 from 7am to 7pm. For more information about the bond, please go to www.lakewaypto.org and click the “Bond Election Q&A” link, or plan to attend the bond presentation meeting in the LWE cafeteria at 9am on September 7.
Passbooks are on sale now. Students received a Passbook and order form in this week’s Tuesday folder. Passbooks are an easy way for you to save money and for our school to earn money. Passbooks sell for $25 each--use a few coupons and “recoup” your money! New this year--each book sold receives a free Blockbuster rental and popcorn. Each student who returns their envelope with an order or an unsold book receives a wristband. If you know that you will not purchase or sell the sample book, please return it to school right away. You can return it to your child’s teacher or drop it in the box in the office. All orders and unsold sample books are due back by September 14.
Sign up your child to be a junior member of the high school’s Cavalette Dance Team! Junior cavalettes get to go on the field with the Cavalettes during the high school football games and cheer on the Cavs. Participants are supervised at all times and stay with the Cavalettes for the entire game. The cost is $25 per game, which includes a ticket and t-shirt. For more information, download the registration form at www.lakewaypto.org/juniorcavalettes.pdf.
The Lakeway Police Department is sponsoring a FREE women’s self-defense and awareness seminar on Sunday, September 18, at 2pm. The class lasts 1-1/2 to 2 hours and is open to all females, ages 14 and older. Women should come comfortably dressed. There is also an advanced seminar after the beginner’s class, which costs $10, and all proceeds will go to the Rachel Alert Network. The class is at the Lakeway Activity Center. If you are interested, please RSVP by September 14 to the Activity Center at 261-1010. If you have any questions, please contact Sgt. Mary Proctor at the Lakeway Police Department at 261-9480.
A message from the Lost and Found… Please remember to put you child's first and last names on all lunch boxes, backpacks, lunch containers, thermoses, coats, sweatshirts, etc. This enables us to return lost items to your child's classroom. At the end of each nine weeks, all unclaimed and unmarked items will be donated to charity. Thank you for your help!
