Lakeway PTO News - January 13, 2006

Monday, January 16 is a school holiday. Enjoy the three-day weekend!

Please be sure to complete your spring volunteer form if you would like to volunteer at the school this semester. The form is available online at www.lakewaypto.org/volS06.htm and also went home in Tuesday folders. The school has many needs, some of which require only a short time commitment from you. Thank you for completing the form online if you can.

The school needs volunteers in the lunchroom and on the playground during the lunchtime recess. This is an easy and fun way to help the kids and the school. Volunteers work once a month from 11:15am to 12:45pm. If you want more information or would like to help, please call Danielle Swanson at 608-9585.

A volunteer check-in terminal is now located in the volunteer workroom at school. Volunteers can use this terminal to check in and check out when they are on campus so they do not need to wait for visitor and student sign in/sign outs at the terminal located in the office. Volunteers do not need to print paper badges if they currently have a permanent one (hanging in the office).

Putting something in the Tuesday Folder? Please provide an electronic copy of your document to Mary Kosacz (kosaczm@laketravis.txed.net) when submitting it for approval. All approved Tuesday Folder items are stored for a few weeks on the school’s Web site at http://www.laketravis.txed.net/LKWY/tuesday%20folder/default.htm.

The City of Lakeway is constructing a Skateboard Park on Lakeway Blvd. next to the Swim Center. The City is having a community meeting on Thursday, January 19, from 6:30-8:30pm at City Hall on 1102 Lohmans Crossing to meet with the public and to discuss timelines and design ideas for the Skateboard Park. The City welcomes ideas from kids who would use the Skateboard Park and their parents.

The LTISD ComPASS program started its new running training program for the school district this past week. This is an awesome "FREE" program for the school faculty, staff, students, parents, and anyone from the Lake Travis community who wishes to participate. The training consists of a 10-week training program for beginning/intermediate runners and walkers and will be held at LWE each Wednesday from 3:00-4:00pm. (Please note that you can train at ANY Lake Travis ISD campus; you do not need to train at LWE.) Runners and walkers will train to be able to complete the Cavalier Band 5K (3.1 mile) “Fun Run” at Lake Travis High School on March 26. RunTex owner Paul Carozza has generously agreed to pay the race entry fee for each runner/walker who completes the program! For more information, or for this week’s runner/walker “homework,” please visit the district’s ComPASS Web site at http://ltcms.laketravis.txed.net/stories/default.asp?SiteID=553&ArticleID=7660&CategoryID=3317. Parents of elementary students must be enrolled in the program and attend the training sessions with their children.

Lakeway Elementary is having its first annual Spelling Bee on Thursday evening, January 19 at 6:30pm. Lakeway’s Spelling Bee is affiliated and registered with the Scripps National Spelling Bee and will be held in the cafeteria.

Help get Spanish rolling at Lakeway Elementary! The district purchased a Spanish program for our elementary schools through funds provided by the LTEF. Through the assistance of the High School Spanish Department, student volunteers started implementing this program in all of LWE’s kindergarten classes in the 2004-2005 school year. We now want to implement the program in all of our first, second, and third grade classes by January, 2006. We are asking for volunteer assistance to make this happen. You need to be able to commit to 30 minutes to one hour per week plus a prep session with the campus Spanish volunteers once every four to six weeks. The classes will be conducted during school hours. Please contact Lori Griggs at griggs64@swbell.net or 261-3045 if you can help with this program.

First Reserved - Best Seated! Preparations are underway for the Crystal Ball, the Lake Travis Education Foundation's annual gala event featuring dining, auctions, casino, and dancing to the music of Wall Street, to be held Saturday, February 25th at the Hilton Austin Hotel. Last year's event raised proceeds to fund $224,000 in grants to the teachers of our school district and $56,000 to graduating LTHS seniors. We encourage you to join us for this premiere social and fundraising event of the year. Sponsorships and reserved tables now being accepted, and the earlier you sign on, the closer your table will be to the dance floor! Details are available online at www.LakeTravisEducationFoundation.org or by calling 533-6095.
